Casa dos Pires

Casa dos Pires

Standing close to the old castle at Paderne, this house reveals the essence of Algarve architecture: simple, unaffected and deeply tied to its place. Despite its advanced state of decay, the material and the memory persist, and it is on these that the works are founded.

The project proposes the rehabilitation and extension of the existing building, preserving its vernacular character while introducing, in a restrained way, a contemporary language. The works take place at ground-floor level, reordering the spaces and improving the structure and the conditions for living there, without losing the original identity.

The proposal joins old and new in one continuous, harmonious volume. The traditional canal tiles are kept over the more private rooms, while the stone wall carries on through, reinforcing the continuity of material.

The new volume draws on the Algarve açoteia, the flat, occupiable roof terrace of the region's houses, making the roof a habitable space: a terrace that opens to the landscape and takes on the role of belvedere, recovering the traditional relationship between the house and the horizon.

The materials and tones — stone, limewash and terracotta — secure the integration of the proposal into its setting, in a subtle balance between tradition and the contemporary.

More than restoring, this project looks to carry on the history of the place, reinterpreting it with care and intent.
