Conjunto Habitacional Maria de Oliveira, in the historic centre of Alcobaça, proposes an intervention that sets a balanced relationship between the architectural heritage of the place and a contemporary language.
In dialogue with landmarks such as Alcobaça Monastery and the Castle, the project rests on an attentive reading of the urban context, respecting the scale, the bay rhythm and the dominant lines of the surrounding fabric. The corner siting is structurally decisive, organising the scheme into two residential buildings that stand on their own but are held together.
Plot A, on the corner, stands as the most exposed element of the development, taking in six flats arranged to make the most of the relationship with the public space. This volume also holds a communal pool, conceived as a place to gather and as the element that draws the shared life of the scheme together.
Plot B, set in continuity with the adjacent urban fabric, develops more quietly, taking in five dwelling types planned for function, comfort and spatial quality.
In both buildings the homes — including two-bedroom and three-bedroom duplex types — give priority to daylight, cross ventilation and the relationship between inside and outside, making for a contemporary daily life suited to its context.
The development includes common spaces for shared use, strengthening the sense of community, while the basement, given over to parking, keeps the scheme working and frees the outdoor space for pedestrian use of a proper quality.
The proposal takes in principles of sustainability, both in how it is built and in the choice of materials, contributing to a harmonious fit with the historic and cultural character of the place.
